Struggling to find the perfect outfit each morning?
3/1/18 will forever go down in the history of my life as the day I stopped wanting to do something, and the day I stopped being afraid to do something, and finally did it. So, thank you. However you came here, I welcome you to my small corner of the internet where I bask in the melanin making strides in the fashion world. It’s funny, because I’ve always envisioned this blog to be about other people; highlighting the beautiful men and women of color making strides in an industry that often feels very monochromatic. I’ve found, however, that there’s another piece of me that I’d like to share with you, and that’s my own journey to a finished fashion line representing me, my culture, and my background.
I graduated from Howard University in 2016, and while I was there, I was pre-law everything until I went to DC Fashion Week with my five friends and fell in love with the designers and the models and the promoters and the photographers who all looked like me. It was a side of the fashion world that I rarely got to see, where men and women of varying brown shades were able to create beautiful pieces for bodies of varying sizes; some of them mirroring my own. I really owe it to my friends; I owe it to Howard, because in this space with these beautiful women I was able to find myself. I found a love of self that I wanted to share with others. And it’s led me here.
If you didn’t already know, Howard University is ranked second on the ‘Best Dressed’ schools in the country. We don’t get dressed and go to class, we get dressed and expect to slay in class. It’s a mentality, and it’s become a lifelong one.
Now, I’m pre-MBA working at a styling company and starting a line of clothes reflective of myself. They’re more than clothes to me. It’s the sharing of an experience and the hope that I can make other people as proud of their beauty, their uniqueness, and their culture as I was able to do with my own. I’m excited to share this vision with you, and I’m even more excited to chronicle the process to a finished line; of apparel that I get to share with you. Thank you in advance for accompanying me on this ride.
