When it comes to preparing for emergencies, particularly in regions like California where wildfires are an ongoing threat this time of year, it’s essential to be thoughtful not only about what you pack but, more importantly, how you pack. One often overlooked aspect of emergency preparedness is clothing, and the fabrics and layers you choose can make a big difference in your comfort, safety, and mobility.
Here’s how you can prep your emergency bag with clothes that are as functional as they are stylish, while also providing physical and mental comfort in challenging times.
Natural fibers like cotton, linen, wool, and bamboo have some inherent properties that make them much more ideal for emergency situations—particularly those involving fires or extreme heat–than synthetics. Synthetic fabrics can be less breathable, more flammable, and less comfortable when worn for extended periods, as we have seen by many victims of recent wildfires having to spend days at a time in their clothing.
Here’s why natural fabrics should be your go-to:
What to Pack: Opt for breathable cotton tees, wool socks, and a linen or cotton scarf that can double as protection against smoke or dust.

Fires aren’t the only causes of emergencies–In any situation, you want clothing that is both practical and functional without sacrificing comfort (or, secondarily, style). Packing versatile pieces that serve multiple purposes can help you stay prepared without overloading your emergency bag. The key is to think about layers and multi-functionality.
What to Pack: Choose a wool or fleece pullover that offers both warmth and breathability, a scarf that can protect your face, and sneakers that are conducive to walking or running.
Emergency situations can be stressful, and it’s important to pack clothing that not only provides physical comfort but also offers a sense of familiarity and calm. The clothes you choose should allow you to stay comfortable, both physically and mentally, throughout tumultuous, unpredictable days.
What to Pack: Include a cozy wool cardigan that can double as a blanket, cashmere socks, and a compact portable blanket or shawl for added warmth and comfort.
While it’s important to be prepared, it’s equally important to support those who have been directly affected by the California wildfires. Many families have lost their homes and belongings, and they need our help to rebuild their lives. It’s been beautiful watching my city come together to support those in need, and here are a few organizations and direct links where you can donate to help families affected by the fires:
In moments of crisis, it’s essential to stay prepared, but it’s also a time to reach out and help others. By packing smart with natural fabrics, versatile layers, and comforting pieces, you’ll be better equipped to handle whatever comes your way. And by supporting those who have lost their homes and livelihoods, we can all make a meaningful difference.
