Struggling to find the perfect outfit each morning?

Listen, I’m going to let you in on a little secret.
Your florals are going to dictate more than you know – starting with your budget.
When most brides begin planning their wedding, the checklist usually looks something like this:
But after years of working with brides, I’ve learned that this order often creates unnecessary stress, design challenges, and budget surprises.
(See how I keep repeating ‘budget?’ I haven’t even touched the styling portion yet!)
This is why, I recommend a slightly different approach:
Yes—florals should be one of the first three major design decisions you make.
Here’s why.
Think about all the places flowers appear throughout your wedding day:
Unlike many other decorative elements, florals are woven into nearly every part of your wedding design.
They’re not simply an accessory. They’re a foundational design element.
One of the biggest mistakes I see brides make is selecting a color palette before they’ve considered their flowers.
Typically, brides select their colors after their venue. But, think about this: not every flower comes in every color.
And this frustrates brides when they hand over colors to a florist who says, “Well, here’s what we can do…”
And it doesn’t match the vision.
Because not every color combination translates into floral design.
Your florist can help identify what’s in season, what’s available within your budget, and which blooms will create the aesthetic you’re envisioning.
So consider the opposite approach: after you’ve established your floral direction, your wedding colors naturally begin to reveal themselves.
A dramatic floral design featuring deep burgundy blooms and dark greenery may lead you toward richer, moodier tones.
A romantic garden-inspired arrangement may inspire soft blushes, creams, and sage greens.
Rather than forcing flowers into a predetermined palette, you’re allowing the flowers themselves to guide the design.
Another reason florals belong in your top three decisions?
Budget.
Many couples underestimate how much florals contribute to the overall wedding aesthetic—and therefore how much of the budget they may require.
Mostly, because many couples forget that many of the florals they want are seasonal blooms.
Meaning they might not be in season at the time of the wedding date.
Knowing your floral priorities early helps you determine:
This creates a more realistic planning process from the start.
Once your floral vision is established, selecting bridesmaid dresses becomes significantly more straightforward.
Instead of endlessly debating between six shades of pink, three shades of blue, or whether everyone should wear a different color, you can simply ask:
“What complements our florals best?”
The flowers become the anchor.
Everything else supports them.
The result is a wedding that feels cohesive, intentional, and elevated.
The same principle applies to the men.
Tie colors, pocket squares, boutonnieres, tuxedo accents, and overall styling can all be informed by the floral palette.
When florals are chosen first, these decisions feel connected rather than random.
This is how you create a wedding aesthetic that feels curated instead of pieced together.
Your venue sets the scene.
Your dress defines your personal style.
Your florals connect everything together.
Because, think about this: the florals bridge the gap between architecture and fashion. Between ceremony and reception. Between your vision and the execution of it. You’ve given your event planner a clear blueprint; you’ve given your bridal stylist a clear blueprint; and you’ve laid the foundation for a cohesive experience that your guests will be sure to remember.
That’s why I always encourage brides to prioritize florals earlier than they think.
(Think a year out).
Because once your venue, dress, and floral design are established, the rest of your wedding aesthetic begins to fall into place naturally.
And that’s the secret most brides don’t discover until they’re already deep into planning.
If you’re newly engaged, remember this simple order:
Venue.
Dress.
Florals.
Everything else gets easier from there.
The difference between a beautiful wedding and a truly unforgettable one is often in the details—and knowing what decisions to make first.
